Lunga Sigaretta Biondo, also known as Sigaretta Verde di Bergamo, is a traditional Italian pepper (Capsicum annuum) with very low heat – only 100–500 SHU. It produces long, thin and slightly twisted fruits with a characteristic “cigarette” shape. The flavour combines sweet and sour notes with a mildly spicy finish, making it excellent for frying, salads, pickling and pizza.

Lunga Sigaretta Biondo is an excellent choice for people looking for rich flavour without strong heat. The fruits are initially light green and turn red at full ripeness, when they develop their most pronounced sweetness.

In Italy, this type of pepper is traditionally used for frying, pickling and mildly spicy pizza, while the fresh fruits are also very suitable for salads.

Variety characteristics

Variety: Lunga Sigaretta Biondo
Alternative name: Sigaretta Verde di Bergamo
Botanical species: Capsicum annuum
Type: Mildly hot pepper
Heat: 100–500 SHU
Shape: Long, thin, twisted and cigarette-shaped
Colour: Light green → red
Flavour: Sweet and sour with a mild spicy note
Sweetest fruits: At full red ripeness

🔥 Heat

100–500 SHU

This is an exceptionally mild variety, for which flavour is a much more important characteristic than heat. The mild spiciness complements the sweet-and-sour profile without overpowering it.

🌱 Sowing and growing

Sowing: January – April
Location: indoors
Germination temperature: 20–30°C
Planting in a greenhouse: for higher yield
Planting outdoors: around the end of May
Support: tall plants can be tied up
Pruning: possible to maintain a compact form.

In autumn, plants can be moved into pots and brought onto a bright windowsill, where they can continue fruiting.

🍴 Culinary use

This is a variety with particularly broad culinary use. It is suitable for frying, salads, pickling, antipasti and pizza. Light green fruits offer a fresh sweet-and-sour flavour with a mildly spicy note, while fully ripe red fruits are the sweetest.

💡 Tip from Urban Botaniks: With Lunga Sigaretta Biondo, it is worth harvesting the fruits at different stages. Use the light green fruits for frying, salads and pickling, and leave part of the harvest to ripen fully red – that is when the fruits develop their most pronounced sweetness.

Sowing method: from January to April, raise seedlings in propagators; they develop best at 25-30^oC in a sunny location. We recommend using a heated propagator, which will speed up germination and growth.

Before sowing, soak the seeds in water for 30 min to soften their coat.
Sowing depth: 1 cm.
Water regularly and do not allow the substrate to dry out completely. We recommend the specialised seedling substrate CANNA Terra Seed Mix 25 l.

Growing method: Chilli pepper is a tropical plant that requires warmth, moisture and sunlight.

Environmental requirements:

Light - a sunny location receiving at least 8 hours of sun per day.
Soil - rich in organic matter
Humidity - do not let the soil dry out. Well-watered soil provides the air humidity plants need.
Warmth - heat-loving (20-30^oC), does not tolerate low temperatures (<10^oC).

Plant the finished seedlings outdoors or in a greenhouse in May, once the risk of frost has passed. If necessary, newly planted plants can be covered with plastic for the first few weeks. This helps them acclimatise.
If you would like to grow it at home, you can browse the options for lighting, ventilation, grow tents, pots and other accessories.

Fertilisation: during the vegetative, flowering and fruiting stages. You can explore our extensive range of organic and mineral fertilisers here.

*After the outdoor season ends, plants can be moved indoors and continue to bear fruit.

Warning! Always wear gloves and safety glasses when cutting and preparing the fruit of extremely hot pepper varieties!
