Piriz (Piriz) is an attractive hot pepper variety of the species Capsicum baccatum, originating from Peru and Bolivia. It stands out with its unusual heart-shaped fruits, which ripen through beautiful shades from cream to purple to orange. Its flavour is fruity and slightly sweet, while the moderate heat of 3 000–5 000 SHU makes it excellent for fresh salads and everyday cooking. Its compact habit is perfectly suited to growing in pots.

Piriz (Piriz) is an interesting South American pepper that impresses with both its flavour and ornamental appearance. One plant can carry fruits at different stages of ripeness – cream, purple and orange – creating a beautiful multicoloured effect.

The variety has a pleasant, fruity, slightly sweet flavour and relatively mild heat. The plants remain compact and are particularly suitable for pots, making Piriz a good choice for balconies, terraces and small urban gardens.

🔥 Heat

3 000–5 000 SHU

Piriz is a moderately hot pepper, making it far more approachable than very hot varieties. We especially note that, thanks to its mild spiciness, the fruits can easily be added to salads.

🌱 Sowing and growing

Sowing period: January – April
Location: indoors
Germination temperature: 20–30°C
Planting in a greenhouse: for higher yields
Planting outdoors: around the end of May
Growing in a pot: perfectly suitable
Pruning: possible to maintain a compact shape

Taller plants can be tied to a support. In autumn, the plants can be moved into pots and brought indoors, where they can continue bearing fruit on a bright windowsill.

🍴 Culinary use

Thanks to its fruity, mildly sweet flavour and moderate heat, Piriz is suitable for:

• Fresh salads
• Salsa
• Spicy side dishes
• Sandwiches and burgers
• Marinating
• Mild hot sauces
• Food decoration

It is especially suitable for fresh use, as the moderate 3 000–5 000 SHU allow the flavour of the fruit itself to remain clearly pronounced.

💡 Tip from Urban Botaniks: Piriz is a wonderful choice for a balcony or terrace, where the compact plant can serve as both an ornamental and edible crop. Leave fruits at different stages of ripeness to achieve the characteristic combination of cream, purple and orange peppers on one plant.
